TATTOO & PIERCING CONVENTIONS
Tattoos and body piercing are ancient
practices that have been ground since the existence of man. Thru time, these habits were
used to enhance beauty, to show social status or for spiritual purposes. As the years
passed the significance of piercings deteriorated as they were assosiated with drugs and
delinquency.
Presently, things have changed. Tattoos
and piercings are used by many types of people, without regard to social level, sex, race
or age. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people out there that are only looking to make
some quick money without ethics, putting in risk the health of those who want to show a
nice design or a ring in their belly.
Tattoos and piercings are high risk
activities which have to be performed in closed rooms, with the right equipment, materials
and tools sterilized in an autoclave. After their use they have to be deposited in
containers authorized by your local health care department, subsequently a specialized
company must pick up the residues.
We all know that every day the number of
persons interested in a great tattoo or a nice new piercing is growing. We don´t want to
respond to society´s "don´t do it"- but how do we do it to avoid diseases and
bad applications? Misinformation is increasing because of the lack of orientation.
The tattoo and piercing conventions are
to create consciousness among the population, since there are a lot of tattooists and
piercers out there. So in these events we try to show the public in general the
professional and hygienic way to obtain a tattoo or piercing.
Your body belongs to you, Go visit a
good tattoo convention and observe or give yourself that present that you have wanted for
such a long time...
Besides we are proud to announce that
among the artists we have had in our conventions, we have a lot of international award
winners.

CONVENTION
ON MEXICO CITY SUBWAY
During the past FEBRUARY 2000 i
had the opportunity to expose my work "Perforaciones Corporales y Tatuajes, Una
Herencia Ancestral" over the largest and most visited museum, "El Sistema
Colectivo Metro" de la Ciudad de México" Mexico City's Subway. The exposition took
place on the Line 1 of the subway on the station Pino Suárez, one of the most transited
stations in the entire world. (In thePino Suárez subway station an average 30.000.000
people pass through each month...)
On these five windows on which the
exposition took place, the following issues were exposed:
- Body perforations on ancient cultures.
- Body perforations in the actual society.
- Ancient cultures tattooing.
- Tattooing in the actual society.
- Sterilization equipment and recommended
care before and after having a tattoo or a perforation made.
Each window was
decorated according to the theme. Therefore the CONVENTION had full equipments for piercing,
perforations, and tattooing, a large amount of body jewelry and designs, tattoo and piercing contemporary photos. Also some images from
different cultures on which body piercing perforations and tattooing are practiced still
with diverse goals. Refering to the hygiene of both practices an "autoclave" and
special bags for
bio-infeccious trash and trash cans werealso placed on the CONVENTION among other specific
safety materials and some papers refering to the aftercare for piercing and tattoos.
Aside, on each window a theme-refered text was located.
The CONVENTION "Perforaciones
Corporales y Tatuajes, Una Herencia Ancestral"was a great personal satisfaction,
but besides of that, i think it was the perfect "space" to inform those who are
or might be interested on the risks, origins, and techniques, and even though many people
might not recognize it was a huge impulse for piercers and tattooists that work on a
hygienic and proefessional way with the precise techniques...
For the second time, we had the
opportunity to expose in the Mexico City Subway System (DECEMBER 2000 and JANUARY 2001).
In this exposition we were given the five displays in the subway station "San
Lazaro", which belongs to the new line B.
The exposition was named: "Body Modifications, From the rite until actual
fashion", in this space we had pictures, articles and goods related to cranial
deformation, dental filing, body paint, tattoos and body piercing.
In this important exposition we had the support from the National Institute of
Anthropology and History in Mexico City. (D.A.F. del I.N.A.H.)

CONVENTION
IN THE "MUSEUM OF MEXICO CITY"
From the begining of civilization,
the body has been the carrier of religious, cultural, and social beliefs of several
communities and societies. Throughout history, alteration and adornment of the body
includding body painting and the usage of jewelry, tattoos, piercing, and scarification
has been one of the primordial languages of self-definition and self-determination
for a cultural identity. In the contemporary society, the mass-culture,seeks a way of
standarizing the body and defends specific models of beauty and wellbeing that pose a
series of norms accepted on the true meaning of the body. On these norms, body alteration
embraces certain thing like plastic surgery, but rejects individual showings of body
intervention because considers them against the standarisation of the body.
As a consequence a need to retake
and recover the body has appeared. Many comunities and individuals has re-batized the body
as a resistance territory. Furthermore, with the lack
of ideologies or political movements somewhat accepted within our social environment these
communities and individuals pose the body as one of the most important spaces of
manifestation against the practices and beliefs tha form our staus quo. As an example for
this, we only need to think on the initial claims of the punk or feminist movements that defended alternate body configurations from those
prefered tools of social transformation. "Señales de Resistencia" which seek to
analize the phenomena of tattoo and piercing on the contemporary mexican society posing
both of them as artistic and cultural expretions and also as expretions of the
problematics of our society.
The showing pretends to unveil the
motivations behind the body
alterations and their recent assimilation as social conventionalisms.
"Señales de Resistencia" will
expose from the most serious and compromised thinkings to the most vane thougths refering
to the usage of the body as a mean of self-definition exemplified through tattoo and
piercing.
The CONVENTION includes drawings,
paintings, graffitti, photographies, audio, performance, and the presence and a temporary
installation of the artists Pablo Ash, Mariana Botey, Desesperado, Dj. Breeskin, Erick "Guaka", Federico Gama, Iván, Dr.
Laura, Carroña, Lucas "Foco", Víctor "Chucky", Cesar Martínez,
Taniel Morales, Neto, Piraña, Russo, Teresa Margolles/SEMEFO, Edgar "Sol",
Carlos Somonte, Katia Tirado, Saúl Villa, and Danny Yerna "Wakantanka".
"Señales de Resistencia" was
presented on the same timeframe of the "XVI Festival del Centro Histórico" on
the Mexico City's Museum (Pino Suárez 30, Centro) from the 29th of march to the 7th of
may 2000.
